Unveiling Minor Inkrements: Your Journey to Healing and Self-Discovery

I’ve got some exciting news to share, and it’s something that’s been brewing in my heart and soul for quite some time. I’m thrilled to announce the launch of my very own stationery business, “Minor Inkrements,” in the spring of 2024. This endeavor isn’t just about creating beautiful stationery; it’s a mission that’s deeply personal and rooted in a life-changing experience.

A Journey Through Darkness

This year has been a profound one for me, marked by an experience that shook me to my core. I faced a trauma that I wouldn’t wish upon anyone, and it plunged me into a seemingly endless darkness. Depression wrapped its heavy chains around me, and every day felt like an uphill battle. It was a time when the shadows of despair loomed large, and I struggled to find even a glimmer of hope.

But as they say, it’s often in our darkest moments that we discover our greatest strengths. In the midst of this despair, I stumbled upon something that would eventually become the foundation of Minor Inkrements – a simple journal. I found it in a discount store, unassuming yet strangely compelling. Its cover had a very encouraging message, and the artwork caught my eye in a way that nothing else had.

The Power of the Written Word

I began to use that journal as a safe haven for my thoughts, dreams, and the whirlwind of emotions that I found too overwhelming to express any other way. It became my anchor, a steady presence in the turbulent sea of my life. When the waves of depression threatened to pull me under, I would turn to those blank pages. Writing became my refuge, a means to release the tempest within and gain a newfound clarity about my feelings.

This practice, coupled with therapy, became my lifeline in the journey to confront my depression and process my trauma. Through writing, I started to heal, and I found the strength to move forward. It was a transformation that I couldn’t keep to myself. And so, the idea for Minor Inkrements was born.

Introducing Minor Inkrements

The name “Minor Inkrements” carries a deep significance for me. “Minor” was my grandmother’s maiden name, a nod to my roots and the strength I draw from my family. “Inkrements” is a play on the word ‘increments,’ symbolizing the significant, yet gradual, progress that can be made through the act of writing and journaling. It signifies the belief that monumental changes can begin with small steps – or, in my case, with small words scribbled on a page.

Our Mission

With Minor Inkrements, I aim to offer more than just journals and stationery. My goal is to provide tools for healing, self-expression, and personal growth. I want this to be seen as a beacon of hope for anyone who’s going through a challenging time, just as I did. If even one person finds the same comfort, escape, and healing in our products that I did in that simple journal, then I will consider our mission a resounding success.

What to Expect from Minor Inkrements

The product line will include a range of beautifully designed journals, planners, and stationery items that are not only aesthetically pleasing but also carefully crafted to encourage self-expression and personal growth. I believe that the act of writing can be transformative, and I want to empower people to embark on their own journey of healing and self-discovery.

Stay Tuned for Spring 2024

I can’t wait to share more details about the product offerings, as well as some sneak peeks, in the coming months as we approach our launch date in the spring of 2024. This is just the beginning of our journey together, and I’m excited to have you with me every step of the way.

In the meantime, if you’re interested in following this journey and staying updated on the progress, please subscribe for more details. You’ll be the first to know about product launches, special promotions, and the latest news from Minor Inkrements. My website will also be undergoing a major makeover in the coming weeks.

Thank you for being a part of this exciting new chapter in my life and for joining me on this mission to inspire healing, self-expression, and personal growth through the power of the written word. Together, we can turn the darkest of moments into opportunities for growth and transformation.

Inkrement #33: Moonlit Dance of Hearts [Short Story]

Writing Prompt: Write a dialogue between two characters—one with high self-worth and the other with low self-worth—discussing their perspectives on love and relationships. Explore how their differing views affect their interactions.
___________________________________________________________________________________

The dimly lit jazz club was a haven for souls seeking solace amidst the cacophony of life. The smoke-filled air wrapped around the patrons like a warm embrace, and the smooth melody of the saxophone drifted through the room, creating an ambiance of both passion and melancholy.

At a corner table, sat two individuals seemingly lost in their own worlds. Veronica, a striking woman with a commanding presence, exuded an air of self-assurance that captivated those around her. Across from her sat Max, a gentle soul with soft eyes and a perpetually hunched posture, as if trying to hide from the world.

Veronica swirled the ice in her glass, her crimson lips forming a knowing smile as she observed Max. She could sense the weight he carried, a burden of self-doubt that held him captive.

“Max, tell me, what do you think about love and relationships?” Veronica asked, her voice low and alluring, like a siren calling sailors to their doom.

Max hesitated for a moment, his fingers tracing the rim of his own glass, before finally speaking. “Well, love seems like a beautiful dream, but it’s not meant for someone like me. I’m just not worthy of it.”

Veronica leaned forward, her eyes piercing into his soul. “And why do you believe that?”

He shrugged, avoiding her intense gaze. “I’m nothing special, just a regular guy with too many flaws. Who would want to love someone like that?”

Veronica’s laughter seemed to linger in the air, filling the space around them like a warm breeze on a summer night. Her eyes held a twinkle of mischief as she continued to unravel the complexities of love to Max.

“Love isn’t a matter of being whole or perfect, Max,” she said, her voice a soft melody that matched the jazz music playing in the background. “We’re all a bit broken, carrying scars from our past, but that’s what makes us beautifully human.”

Max’s puzzled expression softened, his eyes meeting Veronica’s with a mix of vulnerability and curiosity. “But isn’t love supposed to fix us, to mend our broken pieces?” he asked, his voice tinged with hope.

Veronica’s fingers traced gentle patterns on the back of Max’s hand, her touch soothing like the caress of a warm summer rain. “Love doesn’t come with a mission to mend us,” she explained. “It’s not a repair shop for our souls. Love, true love, accepts us with all our flaws and imperfections. It embraces our brokenness, intertwines with it, and creates something beautiful in its wake.”

Their eyes met, and Max felt an unfamiliar warmth stirring within him. Veronica’s presence was magnetic, drawing him out of the shadows he had lived in for so long.

“I’ve never met anyone like you, Veronica,” he confessed, his voice tinged with wonder.

She grinned, her eyes sparkling with mischief. “And you never will. But I’m not here to save you, Max. I’m here to show you that you already possess the strength to save yourself.”

Their conversation drifted to other topics, but the words lingered in Max’s mind. He couldn’t shake the feeling that Veronica saw something in him that he had never seen in himself.

As weeks turned into months, Veronica and Max became inseparable, their connection growing stronger with each passing day. Despite her self-assured demeanor, Veronica found herself opening up to Max, revealing a vulnerability she had guarded for years.

The moon hung low in the night sky, casting a silvery glow over the city as Veronica and Max walked hand in hand through the deserted streets. Laughter and the faint melodies of jazz floated on the breeze, remnants of the enchanting evening they had just shared.

Veronica’s heart swelled with an unfamiliar mix of emotions. With Max, she had found a level of intimacy she had never thought possible. He had managed to peel back the layers of her guarded heart, and she was beginning to realize just how deeply she cared for him.

As they reached a quiet park, Max hesitated for a moment before turning to face Veronica. He took a deep breath, the nerves evident in his voice as he spoke. “Veronica, there’s something I’ve been wanting to ask you.”

Her eyes sparkled with curiosity, and she gently squeezed his hand, silently encouraging him to continue.

“I know we’ve been spending a lot of time together, and I feel a connection with you like I’ve never felt with anyone else,” Max began, his voice wavering slightly. “But I can’t help wondering… where do you see this going? What are we?”

Veronica’s heart skipped a beat at his words. She had pondered the same questions herself, but her fear of vulnerability had kept her from acknowledging them. She took a moment to gather her thoughts before responding.

“Max, you’re right. We have something special, something that’s been growing stronger each day,” she said softly, her eyes locking with his. “But I’ve always been cautious about love and relationships. I’ve built walls to protect myself, and breaking them down is a process.”

“Veronica, do you love me?” he inquired, his voice trembling.

Veronica paused for a moment, as if considering her answer carefully. “I care deeply for you, Max. But love is a complex thing, and I’m still figuring it out.”

Max’s heart sank, and he felt a familiar shadow of doubt creeping back in. “I understand,” he said softly, not wanting to push her away.

But Veronica reached for his hand, refusing to let him retreat into his insecurities. “Don’t misunderstand, Max. My journey with love doesn’t diminish what we have. It’s just that my heart is a labyrinth, and I’m navigating its twists and turns.”

Max nodded, appreciating her honesty. “I don’t want to force anything. I just want you to be happy.”

Veronica smiled, her eyes softening. “And I am happy with you. You’ve taught me so much about myself, about love, and about the beauty of vulnerability.”

As their relationship deepened, Max found himself shedding layers of self-doubt. He started standing taller, speaking with more confidence, and pursuing his passions with a newfound zeal.

One evening, as they strolled hand in hand through the city streets, Veronica turned to Max with a mischievous glint in her eye.

“You know, Max, I’ve learned something from you too,” she said playfully.

“Oh? And what’s that?” he replied, genuinely curious.

She pulled him close, wrapping her arms around his waist. “From the moment we met, there was an energy, a spark between us that I couldn’t ignore. You’ve challenged me to confront parts of myself I had buried deep within, and I’m grateful for that.”

Max felt a surge of emotion, his heart pounding in his chest. “I’m grateful for you, Veronica. You’ve shown me a love and acceptance I never thought I deserved. But now, I can’t imagine my life without you.”

In that moment, they sealed their unspoken commitment with a kiss that spoke of hope, vulnerability, and a shared journey ahead. They knew that life was unpredictable, and they might face challenges along the way, but together, they felt invincible.

In that moment, Max felt a profound sense of acceptance and belonging, a feeling he had never experienced before. With Veronica by his side, he had learned that love wasn’t about seeking validation from others, but about embracing his own worth and being open to receiving the love that was meant for him.

As the jazz club’s melody filled the air once more, Max and Veronica danced together, their bodies moving in harmony, just like their hearts. In each other’s embrace, they found solace and strength, a testament to the power of love to heal and empower even the most wounded souls. And as they swayed to the music, they knew that their journey together had just begun, an odyssey of growth, love, and self-discovery in the embrace of the shadows of the heart.

Inkrement #31: Unraveling Shadows [Short Story]

Creative Writing Prompt: Write a short story about a character who must confront their own complicity in their traumatic experience in order to fully heal and move on.
___________________________________________________________________________

Raindrops tapped against the windowpane, mirroring the incessant rhythm of Jamie’s heartbeat as she stared at the old, worn-out house across the street. It was the place she had spent her childhood—a place that held the darkest memories she had been trying to bury for years.

After a traumatic experience that had shattered her innocence, Jamie had tried to escape from her past, seeking solace in the distant corners of the world. She moved away to a quaint seaside town, far from the memories that haunted her. As days turned into weeks, and weeks into years, she gradually built a new life for herself. Her words became her refuge, and she found success as a renowned writer, painting stories that captured the hearts of readers around the globe.

Yet, no matter how far she ran or how high she soared, the shadows of her past clung to her like a relentless ghost. They whispered in her ear as she wrote, reminding her of the pain she couldn’t outrun. It was a constant battle to keep her emotions at bay, to hide the vulnerabilities buried deep within her heart.

As the years passed, the memories gnawed at her soul, tugging at the edges of her carefully constructed walls. The weight of the unresolved past began to weigh heavily on her shoulders, manifesting itself in sleepless nights and troubled dreams. It was then, in the midst of her seemingly perfect life, that Jamie knew she had to return to the place that held the key to her healing.

The decision to return home was both terrifying and inevitable. The small town, once a shelter from the storm, now felt like a haunted maze of memories. Jamie’s heart pounded as she stood outside the door of the old house, the creaking wood echoing her hesitation.

A familiar voice emerged from within the walls, “Jamie? Is that you?”

It was Derek, her once closest friend, the person who had been by her side during that fateful time. She hadn’t seen him since she left, but his presence now brought back a flood of emotions. With trembling hands, she pushed the door open, revealing a space frozen in time, preserving the past she had tried so hard to forget.

“I never thought I’d see you here again,” Derek said, his voice tinged with surprise and a hint of guilt.

Jamie swallowed hard, trying to find the strength to face the person who had once been her confidant. “I needed to come back,” she replied, her voice wavering with uncertainty.

“I remember everything,” Jamie said, her voice breaking as tears welled in her eyes. Her trembling hand reached out to touch the weathered wallpaper, as if seeking comfort from the past. “The laughter, the secrets, but also the pain. It’s all still here, etched into these walls.”

Derek shifted uncomfortably, his jaw tense, and his eyes fixated on the floor. Guilt weighed heavily on him, the weight of his actions and inactions crushing his soul. He took a deep breath, forcing himself to look up and meet Jamie’s tearful gaze.

“I’m so sorry, Jamie,” he murmured, his voice a mix of sorrow and regret. “I never wanted any of that to happen. I didn’t know it would go so far.”

The room felt suffocating, the air heavy with unsaid words and unspoken truths. Jamie took a step closer to Derek, her pain mixed with a desire to understand how it had all unraveled.

“How could you not know, Derek?” she asked, her voice trembling with anger and vulnerability. “We were supposed to be friends—trusted confidants. But you stood by and let it happen.”

Derek’s face contorted with anguish as he struggled to find the right words. “I was scared,” he confessed, his voice barely above a whisper. “I didn’t know what to do, how to stop it. It happened so fast.”

“You were scared?” Jamie’s voice rose, her frustration bubbling to the surface. “And what about me? Did you even think about how scared I was? How trapped and alone I felt?”

“I did,” Derek said, tears streaming down his face now. “I think about it every day. I wish I could go back and change everything, but I can’t.”

The emotions in the room were palpable, the pain and regret flowing like an unyielding river. Jamie wanted to let go of the anger, to find a way to forgive Derek, but the wounds were too raw, too deep.

“I was just a kid,” Jamie said, her voice breaking. “We were just kids. But you, Derek, you were my best friend. You were supposed to protect me.”

“I know,” Derek sobbed, his defenses crumbling under Jamie’s raw honesty. “I failed you, and I’ll never forgive myself for that.”

Their voices rose and fell in an intense symphony of emotions, a fierce argumentative dance between two broken souls. But beneath the anger and pain, there was also a glimmer of understanding—a shared acknowledgment of their complicity in the traumatic experience that had scarred them both.

As the argument subsided, the room fell silent, each tearful breath drawing them closer together. The weight of their past transgressions hung heavily in the air, but so did the realization that they needed each other to heal.

Jamie took a deep breath, her chest rising and falling as she tried to steady her emotions. The room was thick with tension, the air filled with the weight of their shared history. For so long, anger had been her armor, shielding her from the painful memories that lurked in the dark corners of her mind. But now, as she looked at Derek, his eyes heavy with remorse, she felt the rage inside her subside like a storm that had finally passed.

“We can’t change the past,” Jamie said, her voice now soft and full of vulnerability. “But we can choose to heal and grow from it.”

Derek nodded, his heart pounding in his chest. He had always known that he had been a part of what had happened, but he had buried that truth deep within him, hidden behind a wall of denial. Now, faced with Jamie’s unwavering honesty, the wall crumbled, leaving him exposed and raw.

“I want to be better,” he said, his voice thick with emotion. “For you and for myself. I want to confront my own demons and learn to be a true friend.”

Jamie’s gaze softened, and she could see the pain etched in Derek’s eyes. She had known him for so long, had trusted him with her deepest secrets, but now she saw a side of him she had never known before—the vulnerable and remorseful side that had been hidden beneath a facade of bravado.

She reached out and placed a gentle hand on Derek’s shoulder, feeling the tremor in his muscles beneath her touch. “We can heal together,” she said, her voice carrying a glimmer of forgiveness. “But we have to face our past head-on and take responsibility for our actions.”

Derek swallowed hard, his throat tight with emotion. “I’m so sorry, Jamie,” he whispered, his voice breaking. “I should have been there for you when you needed me the most.”

A tear slipped down Jamie’s cheek, and she wiped it away with the back of her hand. “I know,” she said softly.

As the words hung in the air, the weight of their shared past felt both unbearable and liberating. They had both been wounded, both inflicted pain on each other in their own ways, but now they had the chance to heal together.

The room fell silent as they sat with their truths, the darkness of the past slowly giving way to the promise of a brighter future. They had a long road ahead of them, but for the first time, they faced it together, no longer burdened by the complicity that had once kept them apart. With vulnerability as their guide, they embarked on a journey of healing and growth, knowing that the scars of their past would always be a part of them, but also knowing that they had the power to shape their own destinies, to choose forgiveness and love over bitterness and resentment. In that moment, the storm of their past began to dissipate, leaving behind a glimmer of hope and the promise of a new beginning.

Reflection: The reason I chose this writing prompt is that it really hits close to home for me. In my own life, I’ve had experiences where I had to confront my own complicity in certain situations. It’s not easy, but it’s necessary for my own healing and growth. At first, I didn’t want to admit to myself that I played a part in it all. It’s hard to face the fact that you might have contributed to your own pain, right? But avoiding it doesn’t make the trauma go away; it just keeps haunting you.

The characters, Derek and Jamie, were once inseparable friends, always supporting each other through thick and thin. But their bond was tested when they found themselves at the center of a traumatic experience that shattered their innocence. It’s been years since that event, and they both have tried to move on with their lives, but the scars run deep.

In choosing this prompt, I wanted to dive into the complexities of their relationship and how confronting their own complicity in the traumatic experience would be essential for their healing. Derek, burdened by guilt, has been running away from his past mistakes, while Jamie, trapped in pain, has been avoiding the truth of her own complicity. It’s not just about trauma, but also about forgiveness and growth. So, that’s why I chose this writing prompt. It’s a chance to tell a story of healing, growth, and the strength that comes from confronting our own shadows. And if it happens to inspire just one person to reflect on their own journey, then I’ll consider it a success.

Inkrement #25: Embracing the Dark Side of Creativity

When we think of creativity, we envision vibrant colors, uplifting melodies, and inspiring words. But what about the raw and unfiltered emotions that fuel the artistic fire? What about the moments of anguish, heartbreak, and despair that bring forth masterpieces that touch our souls? Yes, my friends, I’m talking about the dark side—the underbelly of creativity.

It’s no secret that many creative geniuses throughout history have grappled with inner demons. From Vincent van Gogh’s tormented paintings to Sylvia Plath’s haunting poetry, we see that creativity and suffering often dance hand in hand. But why does this dark undercurrent exist? And can we embrace it as a source of inspiration and growth?

The truth is that the creative process is a reflection of the human experience. It is a journey that transcends the mundane and reaches deep into the core of our being. Within that journey, we encounter both light and darkness. It is through embracing and exploring these shadows that we unlock a profound well of artistic depth.

Consider the iconic works of Edgar Allan Poe. His tales of macabre and despair captivate us with their haunting beauty. Poe’s ability to delve into the darkest corners of the human psyche allowed him to create timeless masterpieces that continue to enthrall readers today. By fearlessly exploring the dark side, he tapped into a wellspring of creativity that resonates with our own inner struggles.

But embracing the dark side of creativity is not about wallowing in despair or glorifying pain. It’s about acknowledging the complexity of human emotions and using them as a catalyst for transformative art. It’s about digging deep into our own experiences, both light and dark, and channeling them into a creative outlet.

The process of harnessing the darkness is not an easy one. It requires vulnerability, self-reflection, and courage. It means confronting our fears, doubts, and insecurities head-on. It means embracing the parts of ourselves that we often try to hide away. But within this journey lies the potential for profound personal growth and artistic breakthroughs.

As creators, we have the unique ability to transmute our pain into something beautiful. Our art becomes a vehicle for catharsis—a release of pent-up emotions, a way to process the complexities of life. It allows us to connect with others on a deep and empathetic level, reassuring them that they are not alone in their struggles.

So please don’t shy away from the shadows. Embrace the dark side of your creativity. Allow it to guide you on a transformative journey of self-discovery and expression. Take those moments of anguish and turn them into fuel for your art. Let your vulnerability shine through your work, for it is in that rawness that you create something truly authentic and resonant.
It’s okay to embrace the darkness, as long as you don’t let it consume you. Seek support from loved ones, fellow artists, or even professional resources if you find yourself overwhelmed. Surround yourself with a community that understands and supports your artistic process.

Until next time, keep creating, keep exploring, and remember—within the shadows lies the potential for extraordinary artistry.

Inkrement #24: Shadows of Numbness

Writing Prompt: Describe the feeling of being numb in a poem about depression.
_________________________________________________________________________________________

In the hushed twilight of desolation’s grip,
I am an empty vessel, numbed to the core,
Adrift in the vast expanse of a desolate sea,
Where waves of despair crash upon my soul.

Once vibrant colors now dulled and faded,
Laughter’s melody echoes as a distant whisper,
And tears, imprisoned within weary eyes,
Long for release, but find only stifled cries.

The weight of melancholy settles upon my chest,
A leaden shroud, constricting every breath,
And the heart, once ablaze with fierce passion,
Now slumbers in the depths of sorrow’s embrace.

Days melt together in a monotonous haze,
As the world spins on, oblivious and indifferent,
And the rhythm of life’s symphony eludes me,
Lost in the dissonance of my fractured spirit.

Time stretches thin, like a taut thread of silk,
Bound tightly to the weight of unspoken words,
And the world marches forward, relentless,
While I stand frozen, a statue in the midst of life.

In the abyss of this numbing desolation,
I yearn for a glimmer, a spark of vitality,
To shatter the chains that bind my weary soul,
And set aflame the embers of hope once more.

But for now, I drift, a phantom of sorrow,
Inhabiting the spaces between forgotten dreams,
Longing for the sun’s caress to warm my spirit,
And breathe vibrancy into this colorless existence.

Inkrement #22 – When Paths Diverge-Echoes of a Broken Melody

Writing Prompt: Write about two friends who were once inseparable, but now find themselves growing apart — or even friends turned enemies. (Credit to Reedsy Writing Prompts for the inspiration)
__________________________________________________________________________________________

Emelia and Carmen were inseparable from the moment they met in the schoolyard. Their friendship flourished, their souls intertwined like intricate tapestries. They shared secrets, dreams, and laughter that resounded through the corridors of their lives. In a world determined to tear them apart, they found solace in each other, becoming each other’s unwavering support.

But as they entered adulthood, cracks formed in their once unbreakable bond. Emelia, with her free-spirited nature and hunger for adventure, longed to spread her wings and explore the world beyond their small town of Idlewood. Carmen, cautious and rooted in familiarity, chose the safety of what she knew.

One fateful summer night, they sat on the porch of Emelia’s childhood home, the warm breeze carrying the scent of blooming flowers. The setting sun painted the sky with hues of gold and amber, creating a backdrop of fleeting beauty for their conversation.

Emelia’s heart raced as she summoned the courage to share her plans with Carmen. She took a deep breath, her voice trembling with anticipation. “I need to share something with you. Something has been on my mind for a while.”

Carmen looked at her friend, curiosity mingled with concern etched across her face. “What is it, Mellie? You know you can tell me anything.”

A mixture of excitement and vulnerability danced in Emelia’s eyes as she continued. “I want to move to Los Angeles. I’m ready to share my music with the world.” She anxiously ran her fingers through her hair. “You know that it’s always been my deepest passion. I can’t ignore this melody that haunts my dreams any longer.”

Carmen’s brows furrowed, confusion clouding her features. “But…Mellie, what about us? What about our friendship? We’ve always been there for one another, right?”

“Of course we have! And that’s not going to change.” Tears welled up in Emelia’s eyes, betraying the depth of her emotions. “But this is my calling. It’s about pursuing the music that fills my soul.”

“It just feels like you’re choosing your dream over our friendship.” Carmen’s voice quivered with a mix of fear and bitterness. “How do I manage without you? How can I support a decision that means losing you?”

“I don’t want to lose you, Carmen. You mean everything to me.” Emelia’s shoulders slumped, the weight of Carmen’s words crashing down on her. “But this dream, it’s become a part of who I am. If I ignore it, I’ll be sacrificing my happiness. Why do I have to choose between our friendship and my goals?”

Silence settled between them, heavy with unspoken regrets and unfulfilled promises. The fading light cast long shadows across the porch, mirroring the growing divide between their dreams.

Carmen broke the silence, her voice tinged with a mixture of sadness and resentment. “I just never expected this. I never imagined our paths splitting like this.”

“This isn’t breaking news,” Emelia stated, a hint of frustration lacing her words. “Remember the 5th-grade talent show? Before I belted out that Whitney Houston song, I told the audience they’d see me performing at the Grammy Awards when I grew up. And I meant that.”

Carmen’s eyes widened, disbelief mingling with a flicker of hope. “Do you believe you have what it takes to get a record deal? Are you really Grammy Award-winning, top of the billboard charts-winning good?”

“I know I am,” Emelia scowled. “What is wrong with you? You’re supposed to be my best friend, supporting me!”

“I’m being your best friend by telling you that local talent shows and solos in the church choir are as big as you’re going to get,” Carmen spat, her words sharp as broken glass.

Emelia winced, the impact of Carmen’s harsh words cutting deep. The pain was palpable, a wound that threatened to scar their friendship forever.

“Carmen, please try to understand. I know it seems impossible, but I’m going for it, regardless. If I fail, then at least I can sleep at night knowing I tried.” Emelia reached out, her hand trembling, wishing to bridge the widening gap. “I want you to come with me. We can chase our dreams together!”

Carmen pulled her hand away, rose from her seat, and walked away without a word.

“Carmen? Carmen!” Emelia’s voice cracked with desperation. She stood, her eyes fixed on Carmen’s retreating figure. “Please come back!”

But Carmen kept walking, disappearing into the shadows of the night. The once unbreakable bond that held them together was now frayed, threatening to unravel completely. From that moment on, their friendship spiraled into a tragic dance of resentment, bitterness, and unspoken regrets.

Over time, their paths diverged. Emelia embarked on a relentless pursuit of her dreams in the music industry, her unwavering determination propelling her towards fame. Yet, amidst the glitz and glamor, a pang of longing tugged at her heart, reminding her of the friendship she had left behind. Meanwhile, in the confines of Idlewood, Carmen trudged through a monotonous existence, working at a bank and feeling trapped in a life that resembled a motionless statue. The weight of her own choices bore down on her, saturating her days with resentment and quashing any flicker of hope for progress.

On a stormy night, fate reunited the two in their hometown. Rain pounded against the windows as they stood on opposite ends of a bustling bar, their once unbreakable bond now fractured. Earlier that evening, Emelia had captivated the audience at the Idlewood Performing Arts Center with her powerful voice, leaving them in awe. Word of her talent quickly spread, reaching a few patrons in the bar who recognized her. Approaching her with excitement, they requested autographs and selfies, to which she graciously obliged, her radiant smile forging connections with her adoring fans.

Amid the clamor, Emelia almost missed Carmen’s arrival. But as their eyes met across the crowded room, a mix of surprise and trepidation flickered in her gaze. Carmen turned around and walked out the door.

She pushed her way through the throng of people, her heart pounding in her chest. She reached Carmen, her voice husky with emotion. “Hey, I didn’t expect to see you here. How have you been?”

Carmen’s eyes, once warm and inviting, now held a coldness that mirrored the frozen wasteland of their friendship. “Does it matter? We’re strangers now.”

Emelia’s heart shattered at the stark truth in Carmen’s words. She reached out, desperately seeking a flicker of recognition in the eyes of her estranged best friend. “Carmen, I can’t apologize for pursuing my dreams. Music gives me life. I can’t deny who I am, and I shouldn’t have to.”

Carmen’s lips curled into a bitter smirk. “Oh, how noble of you, Mellie. Following your dreams while leaving a trail of broken hearts behind. Did you ever stop to think about what it meant for me? About what you meant to me?”

Emelia’s voice quivered with emotion, her words measured and resolute. “Of course, I thought about it. Every single day. But it’s not just me, it’s both of us. We should have supported and encouraged each other to pursue our passions. Instead, you let fear poison our friendship.”

“Fear? Is that what you think? I wasn’t afraid, Mellie. You abandoned me.” Carmen’s eyes flickered with a mix of anger and pain. “You soared while I faced my limitations.”

Emelia took a step closer, her voice filled with a mix of empathy and frustration. “I never intended for you to feel left behind. I wanted you to come with me, to share in the adventure. But you closed yourself off, shutting down any possibility of growth or change. You settled for a life that wasn’t truly fulfilling, and you blamed me for the choices you made.”

Carmen’s voice wavered, her eyes welling up with tears. “You just don’t understand. You were always the bold one who dared to take risks. But I’m not like you. I needed stability, security. I couldn’t just throw it all away for a dream.”

Emelia’s voice softened, a mixture of compassion and frustration lingering in her words. “I get it, Carmen. I understand that we’re different, that our paths diverged. But instead of celebrating our differences, you let resentment consume you. And I can’t bear the weight of your bitterness anymore.”

“So what now?” Carmen’s shoulders sagged, her voice barely a whisper. “What do we do?”

Emelia took a deep breath, her gaze unwavering. “We have to face the truth that we broke our friendship.” She blinked away the tears forming in her eyes. “We can’t change what’s been done. But you have to figure out why you’re so afraid to live your life, to embrace the possibilities that lie outside your comfort zone.”

“I don’t know if I can.” Carmen’s tears flowed freely now, mingling with the raindrops that fell. “I don’t know if I have the strength.”

Emelia’s voice, filled with a mix of sorrow and determination, carried through the storm. “You’re stronger than you think. You have the power to reclaim your life, to find your own path.” She took a step closer to Carmen. We can’t return to what we were until you face your fears and regrets. Maybe we never will.”

The silence hung heavily in the air, the weight of their shared history pressing upon them. Emelia took a step backward, her eyes fixed on Carmen’s. “I hope one day you find the courage to live a life that brings you true happiness.”

And with those parting words, Emelia turned away, leaving Carmen standing in the rain, tears mingling with the sorrow of a friendship lost to the unforgiving winds of time. As she walked away, the crowded bar seemed to fade into the background. She could feel the weight of Carmen’s gaze burning into her back, but she couldn’t bring herself to turn around. The storm outside matched the tempest within her heart, the raindrops mingling with her own tears.

Years later, Emelia stood on a stage, the bright lights illuminating her as she poured her heart into her music. The crowd roared in adoration, but a hollow ache consumed her. Even amid her success, she couldn’t help but feel a twinge of sadness for the friendship she had lost. Late nights of laughter and dreaming, now only memories. She whispered Carmen’s name into the night, carrying an unsaid apology. She longed to undo the mistakes that led to their estrangement.

But Emelia wasn’t the only one haunted by the memories of their fractured bond. Carmen, too, carried the weight of what had transpired. In the wake of their fallout, she had built walls around herself, barricading her heart from the pain and regret that gnawed at her soul. She watched from a distance as Emelia ascended to the heights of her dreams, bitterness and envy poisoning her thoughts.

Carmen grappled with the choices that had diverged their paths, their once-shared journey now a bittersweet memory. Emelia’s triumphs served as a poignant reflection of her own sacrifices and self-imposed limitations. A pang of longing pierced her heart as she observed the adoration Emelia effortlessly garnered, a love and support she had yearned for in her own life. Yet, amidst her feelings of envy, remorse crept into her soul. She recognized her own contribution to the fracture of their friendship, the moments she succumbed to fear and bitterness, unable to grasp the magnitude of Emelia’s aspirations.

More time passed, and the wounds of their shattered friendship remained etched in their hearts. Emelia continued to thrive in her music career, but the success tasted bittersweet without Carmen by her side. Carmen, trapped in the suffocating grip of resentment, watched from a distance, her heart heavy with regret.

One evening, Emelia’s song filled the airwaves, carrying the weight of their fractured bond and a yearning for reconciliation. Carmen felt an irresistible pull towards Emelia’s music, her determination faltering as she stood outside the concert venue. In her heart, conflicting emotions waged war—a lingering anger and an undeniable longing for the profound connection they once cherished. Gathering her courage, she took hesitant steps and crossed the threshold into the bustling venue, surrounded by a sea of unfamiliar faces. With unwavering resolve, Carmen purchased a ticket to Emelia’s concert, determined to find solace and, perhaps, rediscover the depth of their bond.

As Emelia’s performance soared to its crescendo, her eyes swept the crowd in a desperate search. And then, on the periphery, she caught sight of Carmen. There she stood, emotions brimming in her glistening eyes, a face she had thought lost forever. Her voice hung in the air as she stepped off the stage. She made her way through the crowd, her heart pounding, until she stood before Carmen. They locked eyes, and in that moment, nothing else seemed to matter.

Carmen’s trembling hand extended, finding solace in Emelia’s grasp. As their hands intertwined, their eyes met in a wordless understanding, sharing the weight of their pain and unspoken regrets.

In that embrace, forgiveness bloomed like a long-awaited spring. All the years of resentment, the distance between them, and the unforgivable deed that split them apart – it all became trivial. They stood, two broken souls, finding solace and redemption in the simple act of holding on. Despite the pain of past wounds and broken trust, they discovered the resilience of creating something entirely new.

I chose the prompt to write a story about two friends who were once inseparable but now find themselves growing apart because it resonates deeply with my own experiences and emotions. Emelia and Carmen, the two friends at the center of the story, hold a special place in my heart. They were once like two halves of a whole, inseparable in their shared laughter, dreams, and adventures. Their bond was unbreakable, their friendship a beacon of light in a sometimes dark world. But as life unfolded and time moved forward, the dynamics between Emelia and Carmen began to shift. It’s a bittersweet tale of how circumstances, misunderstandings, and the inevitable changes that come with growing up can slowly create distance between even the closest of friends. Exploring their friendship, the feelings they confront and the obstacles they face let me explore the intricacies of human relationships and how change shapes our lives. Through their story, I wanted to show how life changes our relationships and highlight the strength of friendship.

Inkrement #21 – A Playlist for the Love I Desire

Writing Prompt: Create a playlist of songs that capture the essence of the relationship you desire. Write a reflection on each song, explaining why it resonates with your vision.
__________________________________________________________________________________________

“Knock You Down” by Keri Hilson, Ne-yo & Kanye West

Love has the power to knock us down, to make us feel vulnerable and exposed. It’s in those moments of raw emotion that true connection is forged. I crave a love that has the strength to touch my soul, to make me feel alive and understood. “Knock You Down” reminds me that the depth of emotions that love can evoke is what truly makes a relationship extraordinary.

But it’s not just about the intensity of emotions; it’s about resilience and support. Life is full of challenges, and relationships are no exception. The song reminds me that even in the face of adversity, love can be a beacon of strength, pushing us to rise above our struggles. I long for a partner who will stand by my side, offering unwavering support and encouragement as we navigate life’s ups and downs together. The idea that love can empower us to overcome obstacles and thrive is at the heart of the relationship I desire.

“Knock You Down” emphasizes the importance of mutual admiration. It’s not just about being infatuated with someone; it’s about truly seeing and appreciating them for who they are. I crave a love where there’s a profound respect for each other’s individuality and a genuine admiration for the qualities that make us unique. I want a partner who recognizes my strengths, lifts me up, and inspires me to become the best version of myself.

I think what I appreciate most about this song is its realistic portrayal of love. It acknowledges that relationships aren’t always smooth sailing. They have their share of challenges and complexities. But through it all, love remains a driving force, compelling us to keep going. I desire a love that is authentic, one that recognizes the imperfections and embraces the journey with all its ups and downs. Because it’s in the imperfect moments that we find the most beautiful and genuine connections.

“After All Is Said & Done” by Beyonce & Marc Nelson

When I listen to this song, I can’t help but feel this incredible connection to the lyrics. It’s like they were written specifically for the kind of love I yearn for. It delves into the depths of love, acknowledging that it’s not always a smooth ride. It captures the complexities and challenges that couples may face, which is so important to me. I believe that true love isn’t always easy, but it’s worth fighting for.

You see, this song embodies the essence of my ideal relationship. It acknowledges that there will be hardships, tears, and even moments where forgiveness seems impossible. But through it all, there’s an unwavering commitment to stand by each other. That’s the kind of love I desire – a love that’s strong enough to weather any storm that comes our way.

One of the lyrics that resonates deeply with me is when they sing, “I’ll never be afraid to say I need you.” It’s a beautiful expression of vulnerability and emotional openness, something I believe is crucial in a relationship. I want a love where I can be my authentic self and not be afraid to admit when I need my partner by my side. That level of trust and communication is what builds a strong foundation.

“You & I” – John Legend

When I listen to “You and I,” it’s like John Legend reached into my soul and plucked out my deepest desires. This song speaks to the core of what I long for in a relationship. It’s all about that unbreakable bond. The kind that withstands the storms, the heartaches, and all the twists and turns life throws at you.

“You and I” celebrates the strength of love, the kind that makes you feel invincible. It’s like finding that person who becomes your rock, your sanctuary, and your safe haven. It’s that profound sense of devotion and support, the feeling that no matter what, they’ll always be there for you. That’s the kind of love I crave, the kind that builds you up and helps you conquer your fears.

But what I love most about this song is how it speaks to real-life experiences. It captures those moments that we’ve all longed for—the desire for a love that lasts, that stands the test of time. It’s like it’s saying, “Hey, love is worth fighting for, and it’s possible to find that deep connection with someone special.”

And you know what else? It reminds us that when life throws its curveballs, we don’t have to face them alone. “You and I” emphasizes the beauty of two individuals joining forces, standing shoulder to shoulder, and taking on life’s challenges as an unbreakable team. It’s that feeling of having a partner who has your back no matter what. A love that’s built on trust, understanding, and unity.

___________________________________________________________________________________________

I chose this writing prompt because music has always been a powerful way for me to express my emotions and desires. It’s like the lyrics and melodies have this uncanny ability to tap into the depths of my soul and bring my vision to life. I believe that songs can be like windows into the heart, reflecting our deepest longings and hopes.

The songs I listed doesn’t even begin to scratch the surface of my love song playlist. But these songs in particular resonate with my vision of a relationship because they embody the raw emotions, the triumphs, and the complexities that come with love. They remind me that love is not always smooth sailing, but it’s the willingness to face the ups and downs together that truly defines a relationship. These songs capture the essence of the love I desire—a love that is passionate, enduring, and rooted in unwavering support. They are the soundtrack to my hopes and dreams, and they inspire me to keep believing in the power of love, even in the face of adversity.

Inkrement #15 – Unplugging for Mental Wellness: My Digital Detox Journey to Self-Compassion

Writing prompt: Describe a self-care ritual that helps you combat self-criticism and fosters self-compassion. Write a step-by-step guide on how to engage in this ritual, highlighting its benefits for emotional well-being.
———————–

Today, I want to share a self-care ritual that helps me out when I feel my inner-critic starting to get the best of me. Picture this: a break from Instagram, Twitter, TikTok, and all other social media. An opportunity to rediscover yourself, and an opportunity to prioritize your mental well-being. For this entry, I’ll let you know the steps of my own digital detox journey, sharing the tips and lessons I learned along the way.

Step 1: Understand the Benefits of a Digital Detox

First things first, let’s clarify what a digital detox is all about. It’s a conscious decision to disconnect from the digital realm, particularly social media platforms, for a specified period. It’s a chance to step away from the constant comparison, pressure, and noise of the online world. But why is it needed for our mental health? Constant exposure to social media can trigger self-criticism, feelings of inadequacy, and a distorted sense of reality. Stepping away allows us to take back our time, regain a sense of balance, and care for ourselves.

Step 2: Acknowledge the Need for Change

For me, the journey started with admitting the toll social media was taking on my mental health. I noticed the inner-critic growing louder, comparing my life to picture-perfect posts of my friends, wondering where I went wrong in my life, and questioning my own worth. It was time for change—a time to prioritize my well-being, to listen to my intuition, and to find a healthier way to engage with the digital world.

Step 3: Set Clear Intentions

Before hastily deactivating all your accounts, take a moment to set clear intentions. Reflect on what you hope to gain from this experience. Is it a desire to cultivate self-compassion, regain a lease on life, or reconnect with your hobbies? Set your goals and keep them in mind as you get started.

Step 4: Decide Your Detox Timeframe

Figure out how long you want to step away from social media. It could be a few days, a week, or even longer. Trust your instincts and choose a timeframe that feels right for you. Keep in mind that this is your path, and there is no need to follow strict guidelines. Give yourself the liberty to experiment and figure out what works best for you.

Step 5: Communicate Your Detox

Let your loved ones and close friends know about your digital detox plans. Communicate your intentions, explain the purpose behind it, and ask for their support. Letting them know will reduce any feelings of guilt or FOMO (fear of missing out) and immerse yourself without distractions.

Step 6: Prepare for Temptations

Prepare yourself for potential temptations during your digital detox. Delete social media apps from your phone or mute notifications. Create a physical barrier between yourself and your devices, like keeping them in a different room or using a designated drawer. Creating boundaries will help you resist mindlessly scrolling and keep your detox on track.

Step 7: Explore Life Outside of the Screen

Step away from the screen and enjoy real-world experiences.. Reconnect with hobbies that ignite your passion and joy. Rediscover activities you’ve neglected or explore new ones that pique your interest. Dive into books, create art, practice mindfulness, engage in nature, cook new recipes, or go on a physical adventure. The options are endless! Allow yourself to be fully present in these real life moments. Enjoy connecting with yourself and the world.

Step 8: Practice Mindful Awareness

During your digital detox, take time to practice mindfulness. Tune into your thoughts and emotions, observing them without judgment. Notice the moments when self-criticism arises and shift your focus to self-compassion. Try different techniques like deep breathing exercises, meditation, or journaling to nurture that feeling of serenity and contemplation.

Step 9: Cultivate Self-Compassion

As you detach from the digital world, take this opportunity to practice being kinder to yourself. Embrace the imperfections and celebrate your unique journey. Challenge your inner-critic with kind and encouraging pep-talks. Remind yourself that your worth extends far beyond the curated world of social media. Embrace self-acceptance, celebrate your accomplishments (big and small), and foster a loving relationship with yourself.

Step 10: Reflect and Integrate

When your digital detox comes to an end, take time to reflect on the experience. Journal about the insights, emotions, and any transformations you’ve encountered along the way. Celebrate your growth and self-love. Acknowledge the lessons learned and consider how you can integrate the positive aspects of your detox into your everyday life moving forward.

By consciously unplugging from the digital world, you can take a significant step toward combating self-criticism and nurturing self-compassion. Through this particular self-care ritual, I learned the importance of signing off to reconnect with myself, finding joy in offline hobbies, and being present in the moment. This is something I try to do at least one weekend a month. Setting boundaries, taking care of ourselves and staying mindful can truly make a difference in one’s mental well-being and to foster self-compassion.
————————–

I chose this prompt for several reasons. My therapist has been drilling in my head that I need to practice more self-care and give myself more grace when it comes to life events. This prompt encouraged me to ritualize a way to take care of myself and my overthinking tendencies. Writing out all the steps encouraged my self-awareness and mindfulness. Explaining the “how” and “why” of taking social media breaks helped me comprehend their long-term benefits. I also hope that this gives someone an idea for how they can handle things when the self doubts and criticism start becoming too much.

Dealing with the Emotional Aftermath of Betrayal

I never thought I would find myself in this situation. The shock of discovering that someone I deeply trusted and cared about wasn’t the person I thought they were has left me reeling. The pain and confusion I’m experiencing are indescribable. The feelings of hurt, betrayal, and rage are all-consuming, and I know that I have a long road ahead of me to heal and move forward. One of these days, I’ll tell the full story. But for now, I want to talk about how I’m dealing with the emotional aftermath.

The moment I uncovered the truth, a whirlwind of emotions consumed me. Anger. Heartbreak. Disbelief. Initially, I questioned my own judgment and blamed myself for not seeing the signs. It’s crucial to acknowledge and validate these emotions. As much as it sucks and no matter how much I want to bury them, I am giving myself permission to cry, scream, and feel the full weight of what I’m going through. It’s all part of the healing process. My therapist keeps reminding me to give myself grace and that it is okay to express these very valid feelings. Trying to deny and ignore them will only make me feel shittier and prolong my healing journey.

Creating a healing and supportive environment has for myself has also been vital for my journey. I’ve found solace in a quiet corner of my home, surrounded by things that bring me comfort. Lo-fi music playing in the background and the smell of lavender from my diffusers have helped create a soothing atmosphere. Taking deep breaths and practicing mindfulness have also allowed me to find moments of peace among the chaos.

Creative writing became my refuge—an avenue for expressing the inexpressible and exploring the depths of my emotions. Here are a couple of writing prompts that helped me navigate my healing journey:

  1. Creating a fictional story or poem that symbolizes the process of letting go and finding inner peace. Metaphor and imagery have allowed me to delve deeper into my emotions and explore the healing journey in a profound way.
  2. Describing a metaphorical journey where I release the weight of betrayal and rediscover my own strength. Through this exercise, I visualize myself moving forward, growing, and finding empowerment.

As I revisited my writings, I started to notice a pattern. Themes of resilience, personal growth, and a spirit that refuses to give into despair. It became clear that despite the pain, I had the power to define my own narrative and reclaim my sense of self. Writing provided a space for reflection and self-exploration, allowing me to make sense of the chaos and find glimmers of hope.

As I navigate this healing journey, I realized several strategies that have empowered me:

  1. Practicing self-care and self-compassion: I’m learning to be gentle with myself, honoring my needs, and prioritizing self-care. This includes making time for activities that bring me joy, seeking support from loved ones, and being patient with my healing process.
  2. Setting boundaries: Establishing healthy boundaries has been crucial for protecting my emotional well-being. This means eliminating contact with the person who betrayed me and creating space for my own healing.
  3. Seeking support: I’ve realized the importance of seeking support from trusted friends and professionals. Sharing my pain and experiences with empathetic listeners has provided validation and a sense of solidarity.
  4. Embracing personal growth: This experience has become an opportunity for personal growth. I’m reflecting on the lessons learned and using them to cultivate greater resilience, self-awareness, and compassion for myself and others.

Despite the shock of the betrayal, it is not the end of my story. With writing as my outlet, some thoughtful introspection, and self-care, I’m gradually regaining my power and accepting the healing process as part of my journey forward. There are going to be highs and lows. Good days and bad days. But I’m determined to find happiness and fulfillment. My progress on the road to healing continues.

Inkrement #12

Writing Prompt: Write a letter to your younger self, acknowledging the ways you were criticized and the impact it had on you.

———————————-

To my younger self,

I’m writing this letter to you today to acknowledge the criticism that you endured and the impact it had on you. I know that the most insults and judgments thrown at you came from our mother. She would always pick apart your clothing with claims that you looked like a slut, your hair with claims that it looked unkempt, your friends with claims that they’re worthless, and your hobbies with claims that they’re childish. She tore down anything that brought you an iota of joy. And I know that it’s taken a toll on your self-esteem. I know it made you unsure of what you were supposed to enjoy or do with your life.

But I want you to know that her words are not a reflection of who you are or your worth as a person. I want you to know that it’s not your fault. You are not responsible for our mother’s insecurities or her need to control you. You are your own person. You deserve to be happy and pursue the things that put a smile on your face. You are unique and special, and your individuality is what makes you stand out. Don’t let anyone dim your light or make you feel worthless. Not even your family. You are capable of achieving greatness and I can’t wait to see all that you’ll accomplish in the years to come.

I know that you’re struggling right now. Life seems hopeless and unfair. But believe me when I say that things will get better. You will find your place in the world, and you will find people who love and support you for who you are. It’s okay to make mistakes. They’re a natural part of life and they’re what help us grow and learn. Please don’t be so hard on yourself when things don’t go as planned. Those experiences can be opportunities to learn and improve.

It’s imperative to remember that you are not defined by anyone else’s opinions or expectations. You were not born to be your mother’s minion. You have the power to create your path and define your success. Pursue your passions, no matter how big or small they may seem. You’ll be amazed at the things you can achieve when you believe in yourself.

In the years to come, you’ll see that there is no specific way to live life. Everyone’s journey is different, and what works for someone else may not work for you. Embrace your journey and trust the process. Remember that life is a marathon, not a sprint, and it’s okay to take your time to figure out what you want.

Writing this letter to you has made me realize how far I’ve come. It’s a reminder that despite the hardships, I’ve been able to overcome and achieve great things. I’m proud of the person I’ve become, and I’m proud of the person you will become.

So, to my beautiful, quirky, amazing younger self, keep your head up and keep pushing forward. You are capable of great things. I love you and I believe in you.

Signed,

Your future self

——————————-

I chose this prompt because it allowed me to reflect on my childhood and acknowledge the impact it had on me as an adult. It also allowed me to give advice and encouragement to my younger self, to say things I wish I heard more of as a young girl. Writing this letter helped me recognize the progress I’ve made, celebrate how far I’ve come, and realize how much work I still have to do.
